Sunshine Baskets

What is a Sunshine Basket?

A Sunshine Basket is a gift-wrapped box that is filled with goodies for a shut-in, an ill person, an elderly person, one bereaved or for some reason needs some cheer. It is intended to bring Sunshine into someone’s life. This is not charity but is a means of letting people know that we care.

Who Receives the Baskets?

A Sunshine Basket is a gift-wrapped box that is filled with goodies for a shut-in, Many years ago, we began giving baskets during the holidays and a list was made of those who should receive a basket at that time. Each year, we give our members an opportunity to submit names of loved ones and friends that they feel need some cheer at this time. Since you are the one that knows of this need, it is important that YOU submit their names. Cards will be available for you to use for this purpose. Filling out all information requested on the card will help us made a nicer basket for this person. We need your help in this.an ill person, an elderly person, one bereaved or for some reason needs some cheer. It is intended to bring Sunshine into someone’s life. This is not charity but is a means of letting people know that we care.

The person receiving the basket does not have to be a member of this congregation or even a member of the church of Christ. They should qualify based on one of the following:

  • Be a shut-in.
  • Be ill at the time the baskets are delivered.
  • Be elderly. We would like to give a basket to our members who have reached the age of 90 years.
  • Be in a nursing home.
  • Someone that needs some cheer at this time.

Who Makes the Baskets?

Many people! Certain items are bought in quantity for all the baskets, such as fruit. Most other things are made and donated by people here. Some people work all year long on items for the baskets.

We make, fill and deliver almost 200 baskets each year. This is a big project so we divide the work into committees to help things run smoothly. A chairman is chosen for each committee. Sometimes the chairman is the only one that works on his committee such as Fruits. Most committees involve many workers. The following committees are used:

  1. Names of those to receive baskets
  2. Handmade items
  3. Homemade goodies
  4. Fruit
  5. Covering boxes
  6. Baskets for diabetics
  7. Filling baskets
  8. Treasurer
  9. Delivering the baskets
  10. Nursing Home Liaison

The success of this project depends on all of us working together. Our greatest need is for people to make or donate items to help fill the baskets.
