Have I Done What I Could Do?
You’ve had one of those nights, haven’t you? A night where you woke up and immediately started thinking about something and you couldn’t stop. I had one just the other night. But, as I was lying there trying to go back to sleep, I had a thought that took me in a totally different direction – “Did Jesus ever have a sleepless night?” For example, the night before His crucifixion, did He lay awake wondering about the following day’s events? Did He endlessly ponder whether or not He had told His disciples everything He needed to impart to them? Or, were the apostles ready to the face the uncertainties of the next few days, years?
Nothing is recorded for us about this, but I envision Jesus lying there thinking, “I have done My best. Tomorrow, I will finish what I came to earth to do.” That doesn’t mean He couldn’t think of other things that could have been done, or that might yet be done, but simply that He had done all He needed to do to fulfill the task His Father had given Him to do. He had given it His all.
Does that describe your life? Can you say confidently:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”2 Timothy 4:7-8
