Schedule Update Due to Covid-19

As you may have already heard, Governor Stitt has announced that churches may begin having services in Oklahoma after May 1 as long as they follow guidelines for infection control. Yesterday, Mayor Holt announced the stay at home order that Oklahoma City has been under for several weeks would be allowed to expire on April 30th. This would appear to allow us to begin worship services at the building on Sunday May 3rd. Last Thursday evening your shepherds met via zoom and had a very productive meeting. We discussed this issue and also reviewed the changes to services made at other congregations to see what would work for us. We came up with several recommendations that we will need to abide by if we are to meet safely and according to the governor’s recommendations.

We know that all of you would wish to immediately start worshipping just as we did in the past. Unfortunately, this will not be possible as the Covid-19 is still circulating in our city and we would not be practicing safety precautions required by the government for our safety. Therefore, certain precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of our members and the people they come in contact with. We ask that you look over these recommendations and take them very seriously.

First of all, you need to judge whether it would be in your best interest to attend worship at the building. Individuals who are over the age of 65 or with any chronic illness would be at the highest risk and would need to strongly consider staying at home until the virus has stopped circulating. The services will continue to be broadcast over Facebook and YouTube and will continue to be available to you so you can worship with us from your home. Hopefully conditions will improve soon so that the quarantine will be further lifted and our older members will be able to worship with us. We will let you know when it is deemed safe for those at higher risk to attend.

At present we will only be having one service starting on Sunday May 3rd at 10 AM. We will not be having bible classes at the building and our bible classes will continue to be online for now. Check the bulletin and the Southwest website to see when these classes will be available. We want to let you know that a great effort has been made to clean the building and sanitize the high traffic areas. If possible doors will be left open so you will not have to touch them. Greeters will likely be wearing masks and will try to maintain 6 feet from you. We ask that you maintain about 6 feet between families even when you are visiting with others. We also highly encourage the wearing of masks in the building to stop the spread of respiratory secretions that spread the virus. If you do not have a mask we have some at the building so just ask and we will try to get you one. We would highly discourage any handshaking, hugging, or any physical contact. We know this is a big change but is necessary for us to meet safely.

Drinking fountains will not be available for your safety and we would ask you to make sure your children don’t try to use them anyway. We will try to have some bottles of water available. During the service, we ask that families stay separated by at least 6 feet in the pews. We will try to have people seated only in every other pew to keep more room between families. At present, we will be serving the Lord’s Supper with the fellowship cups which have the bread and grape juice in one cup. These will be distributed at the beginning of the service and after the service they may be disposed of in a garbage available in the foyer. There will not be any offering trays passed during the service. There will be a tray in the foyer where you will be able to leave your offering.

If this seems like a lot of rules and changes being thrown at you, you are correct. However, remember that if there is an increase in the number of cases of the virus after the quarantine is relaxed, we may go back to a lockdown for weeks to months longer which would be an even greater burden on us. Also, if there is a case of Covid-19 that is recognized in a person who attends one of our services, EVERYONE who attended that service would need to go into quarantine! So if you are feeling ill, please stay at home until you are feeling better and please take these suggestions seriously. We hope to see you in our services soon and we hope that God blesses you in this very difficult time. We will let you know about any changes in this situation. We pray the Lord blesses you and keeps you!

Thoughts on Philippians
Thoughts on Philippians

Philippians is one of my favorite Epistles, but then again, I have a lot of favorites. But one thing that stuck out to me recently was the endearing language that Paul uses here. He writes things like “I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace…” (Phil. 1:7) and “I yearn for

Amazing Love!
Amazing Love!

One Sunday morning as we prepared to take the Lord’s Supper by singing the song “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” the phrase “love so amazing” demanded my attention and I began to explore in my mind the depths of His love and why it is so astounding.  Jesus loves everyone the world over, for

Why Do I Attend?
Why Do I Attend?

The difference in attendance numbers for Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Bible School and Wednesday nights has always been puzzling to me. Why are the numbers not more uniform, or consistent? I know there are a host of reasons; but let me share with you why I attend all these occasions regularly. Communion with God –
